Have you ever watched the movie "Dallas Buyers Club"❓
In this film We jump in a Time Machine travel to the early 1980s during the emergence of HIV, a new & deadly disease. The plot revolves around Ron Woodroof, who stumbles upon a groundbreaking treatment for AIDS symptoms.
The Catch❓
This life-saving drug is only available outside the U.S. Consequently, Ron heads out on a mission to Mexico to procure this vital medicine. Ingeniously bypassing patent laws, he successfully smuggles it back to Dallas. To distribute it, he establishes the Dallas Buyers Club, where there is a $400 monthly membership fee & He provides the medicine free of charge to its members.
Now, imagine a similar project for psychedelic medicine.
Estimates say that one course of psychedelic-assisted therapy in the U.S. could cost you between $5,000 & $10,000. The high price comes from a monopoly on supply & the exclusive rights of authorized psychiatrists to prescribe it. But if you look beyond the U.S., you’ll see that psychedelics have now been Decentralized in many states & fully Legalized in a few, as well as many other countries around the world.
🎬 Picture This:
John sat in his small New York apartment, staring out the 🪟window.
The city moved with its usual frenetic pace, but he felt a world apart. The weight of depression bore down on him. He had tried traditional antidepressants, consulted with numerous psychiatrists, but nothing seemed to work. He yearned for something that could lift the fog shrouding his mind.
His laptop glowed softly in the dim room as he researched alternative treatments. Articles & personal testimonials pointed to the potential of psychedelic medicine: MDMA, Ketamine, Psilocybin. But his hopes dimmed when he saw the high costs. Medicare & Medicaid didn’t cover these treatments, & private clinics charged exorbitantly.
His fingers hovered over the keyboard. “It’s worth a try,” he muttered to himself before dialing the first clinic on the list.
“Hello, this is the Horizon Clinic,” a cheerful voice answered.
“Hi, my name is John. I’m looking for information about your psychedelic therapy protocols.”
“Of course, John! We offer several programs tailored to individual needs. First, though, we need an assessment by our psychiatrist. The initial session is $200.”
John paused, running numbers in his head. “& the treatment sessions themselves?”
“Prices vary based on the protocol,” she replied. “But typically, it starts at around $5,000.”
“Five thousand?” He was taken aback.
“Yes, I understand. But the results are promising. Would you like to book an appointment?”
John sighed. “Let me think about it.”
Over the next few days, he contacted clinics in New York and California. All had similar procedures: an initial assessment followed by expensive treatment sessions. In each case, he felt the same knot tightening in his chest.
He called a close friend, Lisa, who had been his rock through many difficult times.
“Lisa, I’m at my wit’s end,” John admitted. “These clinics are asking for thousands, & I can’t afford it.”
Lisa listened quietly before replying. “I’m sorry, John. I wish I had an answer. But maybe there’s still hope. You deserve relief. Let’s keep looking.”
But days passed, & each call or email yielded the same discouraging results. The treatments were all priced beyond his reach, even after considering clinical trials or crowdfunding. No solution seemed practical.
“John, we’ll find another way,” Lisa said, offering what reassurance she could.
“I appreciate it, Lisa, but I feel like I’m hitting a wall,” John muttered, despondently staring out his window once more. The city outside seemed distant, indifferent to his struggles.
He remained stuck in the fog, unable to find solace. Depression continued to grip him tightly, & the lack of access to treatment made the struggle all the more painful.
Despite his efforts, John realized the current system simply wasn’t designed to help people like him. Financial barriers blocked access to innovative treatments, leaving him frustrated & helpless.
The hope for relief faded into the shadows of the cityscape, the bright colors of hope slowly dimming. John’s search ended not with the promise of healing but with the realization that systemic change was necessary for people like him to afford care.
So like always…
John slumped into his Lazyboy & turned on the TV 📺…
This leads us to the key question:
Can someone legally get treatment somewhere else for a lower price❓
Taking a look around shows that the price for one dose of psychedelic therapy worldwide can be a $1,000💵 or more, especially here in the US where for the most part non of this is covered by Your Health Insurance.
While a week’s retreat, including the medicine is going to be many $1,000’s💵❗️
Flight costs are another factor, with Mexico being the cheapest destination. Mexico is also a well-known health tourism destination, especially for U.S. visitors.
So, how could this idea be implemented to provide cheaper access to psychedelic medicine in the U.S. & Get around these GATEKEEPER Tactic’s❓
How could this vision become reality❓
Pioneering Affordable Psychedelic Medicine Access
💡Embracing a New Era in Healthcare
This vision takes shape by borrowing from the blueprint of the Dallas Buyers Club - a symbol of resilience & innovative problem-solving in the face of healthcare barriers.
This vision takes shape by borrowing from the blueprint of the Dallas Buyers Club - a symbol of resilience & innovative problem-solving in the face of healthcare barriers.
Creating a Sustainable Model
The approach is simple yet revolutionary:
Form a patient group, a collective union that leverages the power of numbers to democratize the access to psychedelic medicine.
Step 1
Forming a Patient Union
This first step involves gathering individuals who share a common need for affordable psychedelic therapy. This group, functioning as a patient union, would represent a diverse spectrum of society, each member bringing their unique perspective & needs.
Testing & Validation would most likely be the right move.
💡 This initial phase of Step 1. involves setting up a pilot project to test the feasibility of this model. This could start with a small group of participants, willing to navigate the legal & logistical challenges. Success in this phase would provide a blueprint for scaling the model, potentially transforming it into a widespread movement.
Step 2:
Collective Negotiation
The union would then use collective bargaining to negotiate with providers & suppliers. By purchasing in bulk, this group could significantly reduce the costs associated with psychedelic-assisted therapy.
Step 3:
Exploring Global Opportunities
Recognizing the varying legal landscapes across countries, the union could explore cost-effective options abroad, particularly in countries where psychedelic substances are legal & the treatment is more affordable.
🍄 Cultivation as an Alternative
In areas where psychedelic substances are decriminalized, the group could consider cultivating their own supply. This approach would not only reduce dependency on outside suppliers but also allow for greater quality control & personal connection to the therapy process.
Step 4:
Quality & Legal Assurance
Ensuring the quality & legality of the substances would be paramount. The group would need to establish protocols for verifying the safety & efficacy of the medicines obtained, adhering to a set of stringent standards.
A Vision of Empowerment & Change
In essence, this model is not merely about providing access to affordable medicine. It’s about challenging the status quo, empowering individuals to take control of their mental health, & creating a healthcare system that is more inclusive, compassionate, & responsive to the needs of its people. Just as the Dallas Buyers Club served as a beacon of hope during the AIDS crisis, this new venture could light the way towards a more humane & equitable approach to mental health care.
We are a collective consciousness. The sooner We grasp the concept the better Our choices will serve the entire whole rather than just Our personal agenda.”
